Sand sculptures and iBeacons in the Prins Bernardhoeve

10 APRIL 2014, GRONINGEN, THE NETHERLANDS
Summary
Sculpture Park, the name of Event Centre ‘De Prins Bernardhoeve’ this summer, will implement iBeacon technology during an exhibition of sand sculptures: ‘De Hondsrug Verbeeldt’. Central topic of the exhibition is the rich history and evolution of the first Geopark in the Netherlands. Visitors have access to exclusive information with a special iOS and Android app. The application is developed by Tapme Media.

Tapme Media and the Prins Bernardhoeve have teamed up to create a unique interactive visitor experience with iBeacon technology during world’s largest indoor exhibition of sand sculptures. The Beacons are placed close to the sculptures. When a smartphone or tablet is in range of a beacon context-aware content about the sculpture is broadcasted to the device. The exhibition depicts the rich history and evolution of ‘De Hondsrug’ over the last 150.000 years including the Ice age.

John Franke, Managing Director of De Prins Bernardhoeve: “Immediately we were excited about the possibilities of iBeacon technology. The sand sculptures depict various periods and topics of the geographic Hondsrug area. By partnering with Tapme Media we are able to educate and entertain visitors about the history of this unique area in an innovative way. With this technology we are also able to attract the smartphone generation and we can stimulate visitors to visit numerous expedition ports and hotspots in the Hondsrug area after visiting the exhibition.”

Visitors will have access to animations, images and videos from the real environment, audio fragments, detailed background information and images and videos from the making-of. Professor ‘Van Gniffelen’, a character in the animations, narrates visitors of all ages and educates about the history of the Hondsrug.

CEO of Tapme Media, Sietze de Jong: “This is an exciting new project for Tapme Media after the successful launch of iBeacon technology in the Groninger Museum. The exhibition ‘De Hondsrug Verbeeldt’ has high educational value. Our platform is extremely suitable for educating about the history and evolution of the Hondsrug in a mix of media. The application narrates the story based on the location of the visitor who can take their own route inside the exhibition on which the content will automatically adjust.”
